Celebrating New Voices In Music

Resonance 2019

Going into our third year of composition programs, Resonance is now offering a group composition class for elementary students grades 2-5 at Prairie Music & Arts in Sun Prairie, WI. In this class we will learn the basics of creating and structuring a composition. While students will create individual projects, we will also collaboratively compose a piece for a large concert band together!

"Our kids are naturally curious and creative. The challenge is to help them maintain this curiosity and cultivate their creativity. Resonance is an amazing program that offers students the opportunity to develop and enhance their creative thinking through music composition. My son, Miles, absolutely loved translating his ideas into musical ideas that could be shared with others. He grew so much in just one year and continues to compose and share his ideas with others. I'm very grateful for the excellent teaching taking place at Prairie Music &Arts." Resonance 2018:

As of the fall of 2017, we are excited to have the support of multiple organizations in Sun Prairie and our reach has expanded to Oshkosh and Waunakee. Sun Prairie's own, Prairie Music & Arts is housing the majority of the program's private composition lessons with composer Jon Nelson, and offering their facilities for the composers' forums held through the spring 2018 semester. Sun Prairie's Education Foundation has provided a generous grant making it possible to bring in various guest composers to share their work, composition process, and experience as professional musicians with students of all ages throughout the Madison area. Again this year Sun Prairie's Arts Alliance with support from the Bank of Sun Prairie will be sponsoring the Resonance capstone concert to take place on March 10th, 2018 where new compositions from students and professionals alike will be premiered.

In total, 47 musicians performed in Resonance's 2017 capstone concert at the Sun Prairie Performing Arts Center, including 40 high school music students, 7 of whom assumed leadership roles as composers and directors of their own small ensembles, which all premiered original works. This also included performances from composition mentors, Jon Nelson and William Smith, alongside other professional music teachers and performing community members.

Emma’s Piece, “The Future“ after it’s premiere at Resonance’s 2017 Capstone Concert, was awarded the 1st place award in WSMA’s 2017 Composition Competition! Congratulations to Emma!
